Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed… In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river watering the garden flowed from Eden. Gen. 2:8,9,10a (NIV)

I.  THE SOURCE OF LIFE

TREE OF LIFE = Focus on right and wrong

TREE OF KNOWLEDGE OF GOOD & EVIL = Focus on relationship with God You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.  Gen. 3:16,17 (NIV)

II.  CONTRAST:

Now the serpent … said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”  The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,

            FREEDOM

but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”

            RESTRICTION

“You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; Gen. 3:1-7 (NIV)

III. RESULTS:

            BROKEN RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. Gen. 1:8 (NIV)

            BORN IN SIN

For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.  Rom. 5:19 (NIV)

            PREOCCUPATION WITH RIGHT AND WRONG

So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him. Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.” For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.  John 5:16 – 18 (NIV)

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge…  Pro. 1:7 (NIV)

Which are you?

            UMPIRE  or  LIFEGUARD

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.  John 3:16,17 (NIV)

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”  John 13:34-35 (NIV)

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.  Rev. 22:2 (NIV)
